1. SEPT. 13, 2016 (Agua Dulce, Calif.): Just ask anyone whoâs attended. No other racing event covers such a broad spectrum of experiences like the Mexican 1000. 2017 marks the 50th anniversary of the race. This yearâs event will be even more spectacular with a first night stay in beautiful San Felipe and lots of new and exciting additions. What makes the Mexican 1000 so special? For starters, itâs a travelling car show but still a serious competition for both restored classic race cars and state of the art two, and four wheeled vehicles. Many of the drivers and riders who made those old cars and bikes famous, participate in the rally every year. They can be found lining up next to you on race day, hanging out in the pits, or sharing a meal and a few drinks at the celebrations each night. NEW! this year is the addition of the Day 1 finish and overnight in San Felipe. This cuts down the initial Day 1 time and allows everyone a chance to acclimate themselves with the rally format if they are unfamiliar, shake out the bugs if any, and soak up the remainder of the day along the malecon overlooking the beautiful Sea of Cortez. âThe Happiest Race On Earth!â is entirely about having fun and creating memories that will last a lifetime. You will experience the most stunningly beautiful Baja scenery as you make your way down the entire length of the Baja Peninsula without the incredible stress and lack of sleep associated with a typical peninsula run. After each day of racing, you will have enough free time to experience a different location in Baja with your friends and family. Each overnight stop has its own unique charm and character. There will be some race sections where the bikes and cars will run separate, but all competitors will be staying in the same towns and attending the same events every night. For the 50th anniversary there will be even more hospitality and special events each night. While there are certainly some favored drivers (like a certain Robby Gordon above) and vehicles in the rally, rest assured that every entry gets their own 5 minutes of fame somewhere along the course. (HINT: "eSteekers" and hand outs are always a crowd pleaser!)New this year will be several benefits aimed at the racers. Additional Insurance is available, (increased medical insurance to $10,000, legal support, and bail bonds). There is a new scoring and timing system that uses the latest technology to increase safety. There will be FREE MAG-7 pit support for EVERY entry including cars this year, and the Race for Cash will have an optional daily jackpot which means 6 opportunities to win plus the overall in your category, (more information will be provided in separate press release).After days of competition, there is a unique camaraderie that is forged between the racers. They all pitch in to make sure everyone makes it to the finish line in Cabo and the incredible awards ceremony that follows. The very first adventurers who set off to run the peninsula would throw a huge celebration afterwards to mark their accomplishment. That tradition continues to this day at the Mexican 1000. If you love to race, love to have fun, and love the food, drink and music of Baja, you must come down and experience âThe Happiest Race On Earth!â, the NORRA Mexican 1000. ABOUT NORRA Beginning in 2010, the National Off Road Racing Association (NORRA) began promoting a rebirth of the NORRA Mexican 1000 rally. The unique off-road rally was co-created by promoter Mike Pearlman to consist of special stages (unlimited speed timed stages in the dirt) linked together by controlled speed liaison / transit sections (highway). The one-of-a-kind, once-a-year, four-day rally includes vintage off-road vehicles and motorcycles, as well as modern desert Rally Raid cars, pre-runner trucks, buggies and motorcycles. Pearlmanâs late father Ed and others established the first running of the NORRA Mexican 1000 off-road rally in November of 1967, which eventually became internationally recognized and evolved into the Baja 1000 in the mid-1970's. The 2016 NORRA Mexican 1000 was supported by Azunia Tequila, Walker Evans Racing, South Point Hotel Casino, Bilstein Shock Absorbers and Mastercraft/Impact Safety. In addition, Yamaha has been named the official support vehicle and power products provider for Greaves Motorsports, which includes a full range of generators and pressure washers.

In the upcoming 2017 TORC Series, three-time Pro2WD champion and current Pro4WD title holder, CJ Greaves will be competing in the PRO Stock UTV class aboard the Yamaha YXZ1000R. CJ will debut the newly built YXZ1000R in the final 2016 TORC event, which will be held at Crandon International Raceway in Crandon, WI on Sept 1-4. This will be the very first short-course World Championship UTV race held at Crandon International.

Johnny Greaves commented, âWe are very excited about the opportunity to partner with Yamaha for the 2017 TORC Series. Itâs really a perfect fit for our program! Almost all of our current partners are already involved with Yamaha and/or UTV racing, including Monster Energy, Toyota, Maxxis Tires, Method Wheels, Fox Shox, and Impact Racing. In addition, we are very excited to announce our partnership with Graves Motorsports, a well-known manufacturer of performance parts for Yamaha powersports products, including the YXZ1000R.â

This is a new class for TORC, and the series made an announcement earlier in the year that the UTV Class would be added to three of the 2016 rounds. Also, starting in 2017, UTV would be a PRO class at all pro events. When CJ heard this and watched the first race, his immediate reaction was, âDad, those things are hauling butt. I would love to try one!â After spectating at the first event, the team agreed that the only way to win the class would be with a Yamaha YXZ1000R. It features the first-ever three cylinder, 998cc engine; a sequential five-speed manual transmission; and a fully adjustable FOX racing suspension.

After multiple discussions with representatives from Yamaha Motor U.S.A.âs Racing Division--including Keith McCarty, Motorsports Racing Division Manager, and Donnie Luce, Off-Road Coordinator--we decided to kick the program into high gear and see if it was possible to have a UTV ready for the first ever World Championship race at Crandon International. The vehicle arrived with two weeks to build and test it, and YES, the mission was completed. The YXZ1000R is ready to rock!

We would like to thank all the partners involved in helping to bring this project to fruition:

YAMAHA MOTOR CORPORATION, U.S.A. - MONSTER ENERGY - GRAVES MOTORSPORTS - FOX SHOX - MAXXIS TIRES - METHOD WHEELS - IMPACT RACING - AMSOIL - VICTORY SIGN

Follow us on Facebook at www.facebook.com/UTVGuide View the full article
 11. The 1948 Monster Energy Pro UTV driven by Matt Burroughs and co-driver Dan Lewis finished 2nd overall UTV at 2016 Vegas to Reno. After a huge disappointment at the Mint 400 (running top 5 overall late on the 3rd lap) and a 2nd place finish at the Laughlin Desert Classic, the team was confident heading into Vegas to Reno. âWe worked really hard getting the car ready for V2R. We kept testing in Barstow getting the car a little better every time out. In addition, Benchmark Performance spent hours of dyno time giving us a motor that we knew would be both strong and reliableâ

<imgheight="266" src="http://www.cognitomotorsports.com/wp/wp-content/uploads/2016/09/CHEN5785-2.jpg" width="400" />

4 wheel vehicles lined up at 9:00 for a 9:30 start. With upwards of 350 vehicles in the race, getting them off the line is a long process. As the machines roared off into the harsh Nevada desert, the dust started to settle in the valleys surrounding the start. Dust and the rising sun can make for poor visibility. You mix visibility and nasty silt together and you have a recipe for disaster. âThe first 50 miles to pit #1 were simply crazy. There were cars and trucks stuck everywhere. We just tried to stay calm and pick our way through all the chaos. We actually welcomed the break with the transfer from pit #1 to pit #2 as the first 50 miles were really stressful.â

âAt the restart we got close to Cognito and tried to push even harder. The car was working simply amazing. However, other than seeing their dust miles ahead, this would be the last time we would see Cognito until the finish line." Day one was a dream run in our Polaris RZR XP1000. No belts, no clutches, no flats, nothing. Stage one ended in Tonopah NV and the team had a chance to inspect the RZR. A quick prep on the RZR was all that was needed for day 2 which included a new belt, fluids and axles."

"Day two we started 3rd UTV behind Cognito. Our plan was to maintain a steady pace and try to keep them in sight. The pace set on day one was crazy fast. Day two was a much longer race and keeping that pace would be tough. Partnering with the best companies in the business gave me the confidence to push the RZR to its limits. Justin would set a blistering day two pace. I could see his dust on the horizon but reeling him in was impossible. But by the mid-way point, they simply checked out and we lost contact. The last 30 miles of the course was brutal. The rocks can end your day fast. I was running 2nd on course but on corrected time we didn't know where we stood. I trusted both our Polaris RZR XP 1000 and our tires in the rocks. We turned the heat up and pushed hard to keep our spot on the box. We finished strong and our team did an amazing job."

"Our only issue we had either day were outrunning our pit crews. Coming into pit #11 we radioed to our crew that we were coming in. They replied back to look over at the highway. We could see them still driving on the highway just coming into the pit. We would arrive at the pit about a minute before them and would have to wait a bit to gas.â

âWe dedicated our 2nd place UTV overall finish to my wife who's battling breast cancer. She is 14 weeks into 20 weeks of chemo, lost her hair, feels like crap but still came to the race as team mom. She is the glue of our team. We are inspired every day by her strength and courage in this battle!â

âAt the finish line âJoey Dâ surprised us with a $5k bonus from Polaris for finishing 2nd overall UTV. Unbelievable for Polaris to hand out this kind of cash. There is definitely a reason Polaris RZR took the top 2 overall podium spots at V2R. When Chad started racing UTVs he got the idea to develop parts when he started modifying his own Polaris RZR XP1000. Chad quickly realized the machines had real performance potential by applying race-worthy parts. He wanted to apply the principles of custom Trophy Truck designs to his RZR. Back in 2007, Chad was running a Trophy Truck team and it was there that he first met Danny Gormican. Danny has designed and fabricated for top desert racing teams as well as vehicle aftermarket products. Both are off-road enthusiasts and motorcycle riders and it was a natural progression for them to embrace the new SXS that arrived on the market. They both enjoyed their new vehicles but saw a need in the market for something more. By combining their individual expertise from the Professional Motorsports industry CageWrx was born. Originally their focus was on the racing performance aspect but they quickly realized there was a bigger demand.

CageWrx is able to engineer and manufacture high quality products based on their extensive knowledge in Professional Motorsports. 16. 2016 Vegas to Reno, 1918 Cognito Motorsports

Vegas to Reno is the longest off-road race in the United States, and this year it was a 2-day event racing 220 miles Friday and 350 miles Saturday for a total of 570 miles. We have been on a roll this season and I donât think I have ever put this much pressure on myself before a race, my heart was pounding before the race and I canât wait to just get the race started which calms me down as the focus is on the next turn on the dusty course we are racing on. After the race starts, I am doing it rather than thinking about it.

<imgalt="1918 Cognito Motorsports" src="http://www.cognitomotorsports.com/wp/wp-content/uploads/2016/06/EP2_9250.jpg" height="265" title="1918 Cognito Motorsports" width="400" />

The first 20 miles of the race was full of broken and stuck trucks and cars, and dust sitting in the air blocking vision. The silt beds were obnoxious and 2wd vehicles had a tough time in them, a lot were stuck and piled into each otherâs bumpers. Mitchell and I were patient and smart and let the 4wd RZR do its work. The next 200 miles were also a test of patience as the terrain was a lot of soft and silty straight roads that required watching engine temps and just making sure to finish out the day strong. Of all trucks, cars, and UTVs, we had started 148th of about 180 entered, and at the end of day 1 we had finished 59th putting us faster than a lot of trucks and cars that are in faster classes. Of all UTVs, we had started in 5th position overall and 1st position in class and ended day 1 in 2nd position overall and 1st in class. Our goal is to win our non-turbo class, but of course, an overall UTV victory would be stellar, beating everyone including turbo UTVs would be very impressive. Carver was out front on day 1 in his RZR XPTURBO, so starting day 2 we were in good shape and right where we needed to be.

At the start of day 2, staging order would be that of the way day 1 was finished, so we started in 59th position for the day, and 2nd overall UTV behind Carver but with about 5 trucks separating us, and with plenty of fast trucks and cars behind us that had issues on day one. Mitchell did a great job keeping an eye on the rear view mirror and as those big trucks were coming, we knew before they were very close. We looked for good places to pull over before they reached us and let them by safely. If you donât know, desert racing is scored on corrected time, so even though we are at the front of our class physically, we donât know if someone who started later is catching us and they could actually beat us on corrected time even though they are behind us.

Day 2 was a much more enjoyable course, it paid off to get thru day 1 and be able to have some fun on day 2, there was much less silt which brought speeds up and we were really able to shine with our equipment and skills. About 150 miles in and with clean air, we started to get into some dust so we knew we were catching someone. About 5 miles later we could see a flashing blue light thru the dust which is a tell-tale sign of another UTV and we knew it had to be Carver. It was tough to get close, the dust was crazy since the ground was so dry and there had already been over 50 heavy and powerful trucks and cars run over it that loosen up the ground. We ended up in a wash section that had some sand in it and that was our opportunity to pull up on Carver who looked to have a low rear tire, we made the pass and tore off knowing it was all up to us know to keep it together for another 200 miles. The rest of our team chasing the race was giving us updates on the next UTV behind us, we had a few minute cushion but it was too close for comfort so we poured it on to try and get away and widen the gap. We came across some more dust and figured it had to be a truck that might be having an issue and not at full power, but it was tough to get close due to visibility. We were held back for a good ten miles knowing that the UTVs behind us were able to gain on us if they had clean air. Then we saw the truck pull over about a quarter mile ahead of us just before a big hill, they turned around like they had blown a turn, when we got to the turn we noticed it was actually a Y with 2 arrows that were telling you to go either around it or over it. They went around it and we went over it which was super sketchy going down the other side, we were able to get around the truck with this move and had clean air again.

Through the next pit our support team told us we still only had 3 and a half minutes on Matt Burroughs, I was in awe that he was keeping up with our pace but was also proud because he was running on Cognito suspension. We were now in a section that was like rally racing with graded roads and a lot of curves, but there can always be a rock in the road around the next turn so its tuff to go all out. We were doing about 65 thru this section and drifting the corners, it was a really good time and then we come around the next right-hander and there is a bowling ball sized rock in the middle of the road that was obviously kicked out there by a truck. Our smaller UTVs canât handle going over a rock that large at those speeds, and we missed it with the front tires but blasted into it with the driver rear. Immediately were heard some crazy noises and I thought we had just blown it. The brake pedal went to the floor and it sounded like we were dragging something. We pulled over and Mitchell got out and said it was just a tire and wheel, he got it changed in a hurry and we were back to racing again and all seemed well even with the brakes. We were relieved except that darn truck had gotten by us, we soon caught up to his dust again but couldnât get close enough for a pass, the dust was still blinding and we knew the next UTV had to be getting close after we spent time changing the wheel and now held up again in the dust. After about ten minutes of eating dust for lunch, the truck had slowed down as there were 2 cars broken down one on each side of the narrow road, and the gap between the 2 was barely wide enough for a truck to squeeze thru. This allowed us to get on the trucks bumper and go faster thru the gap since we are much narrower, luckily the truck saw us and let us pass before they stirred up dust again. We thought that was a gift and worked out perfectly for us.

The next 60 miles we ran a fast pace all the way to the finish, not knowing how far back the next UTV was. We crossed the finish line 1st overall UTV but we knew that someone could actually beat us on corrected time. The rest of the Cognito crew met us there at the finish as well as Joey from UTVunderground and assured us that the rest of the field was not close enough to beat us. We had just won Vegas To Reno and it felt super special as that is back to back V2R overall wins and also makes 5 in a row wins for us this season with 3 of those 5 wins being overall. Joey had a special surprise for us from Polaris as they had decided to put up a bonus for podium finishes in Polaris vehicles, and if all 3 podium spots were filled with Polaris, they would double the bonus! We walked away with a $10k bonus from Polaris which is much appreciated! This sport does not make a living for Cognito so with some extra money to help with expenses, it makes a win even more enjoyable and special!

Special thanks from the Cognito team to UTVunderground for the race coverage and to Polaris for helping fund that coverage. 18. Apparently the folks from Best In The Desert decided to celebrate the 20th Anniversary of the longest off-road race in America by making it the toughest race in America, too! The General Tire Vegas To Reno "The Long Way," Presented by Fox also featured a unique split into two days and nearly 350 entries, including 60 UTVs. As the defending winner of this race, DragonFire decided to stack the deck with a full house of racers, including last year's BITD Pro Unlimited UTV class winner Lacrecia Beurrier, short course sensation Corry Weller, Lucas Oil Regional champ Bobby VanBeekum and UTV Rally Raid winners Jimmy Keys and Russell Griffin. "DragonFire really upped the ante for the 20th Anniversary of V2R," says DragonFire Racing's Operations Manager Brice Ginn. "With a pair of queens in Lacrecia and Corry and a couple of kings with Bobby and Russell, not to mention a Joker with Jimmy, we thought we had a winning hand to beat Vegas To Reno... we really did." Pre-race odds placed VanBeekum at 4:1, Buerrier at 6:1, while short course sensation Weller went off in a nearly stock Yamaha at 7:1 and the KeysCrete team wasn't even on the board. Unfortunately a raw deal saw Bobby VanBeekum having to fold on Day 1. "Very sorry to say we did not finish the first day... We lost the water pump line which ended up taking out a head gasket," explained the odds-on favorite to win the DragonFire Cup awarded to the top finishing DragonFire team. "I do want to thank all the great sponsors that stand behind us and let everyone know we will be back out front next time." "We were ready to repeat with a V2R win, but silt happens," quips last year's winner Lacrecia. "We were lucky enough to begin this race in the top 10 after a 3rd place finish at the Laughlin Desert Classic and hoping to run clean to the finish on the first day." Day #1 was a 296 mile dash to the finish in Tonopah... or was supposed to. A military helicopter crashed on the course just hours before the start on Friday morning. The crash area was declared off limits by the military, which left Best In The Desert scrambling. Casey Folks and the BITD crew came up with Plan B: When the racers reached Pit #1, they clocked in and then had to load up the race vehicles and take them down the highway to Pit #2. This resulted in the race being able to continue around the off-limits area. Plan B worked, but it couldn't prevent the carnage that ensued. Race Mile 6 marked the start of a very deep silt bed... something short course racer Weller hadn't seen before. "When we hit it, we were in a complete white-out. While you can't just stop in the silt, it's extremely dangerous to just plow through at full speed, so I did my best to maintain a decent speed, but not go so fast that I couldn't make a sudden stop if I needed to" says Corry. "That is when we started to see the ghost images of upside down trophy trucks, just the rear wheels sticking out of the ground, and outlines of drivers and co-drivers waving frantically at us to avoid the carnage all around," she explains. "One of the shadowy figures waved us to a space just big enough for us to squeeze through without stopping. We managed to make it through that mess without stuffing our own YXZ1000R into a ravine or hit anything." The efforts of good Samaritans somehow saw all three remaining DragonFire teams make it through to the restart at Pit #2. "My team unloaded, fueled and sent us back out still in the top 5," says Lacrecia. As the teams plowed through another 200 miles of pure silt, belt temps began reaching 240-degrees, overheating the CVs and melting the occupants inside the race cars. "Luckily a couple of water crossings gave us a bit of a cool down. We crossed the finish line on Day 1 6th overall UTV and 3rd Pro Production UTV." The wildcard entry of Jimmy Keys and Russell Griffin did even better on Day #1. This couple of jokers came all the way across the country to compete (normally they race the UTV Rally Raid Series in the Southeast) and they made the most of their spot at the table, finishing just in front of Lacrecia 5th overall and 2nd in the Pro Production class. "We love Lacrecia and Corry, but we didn't come all the way across country to finish second," says Keys. Desert racing newcomer Corry Weller started 27th position in class, out of 30+ entries, and after all of the Production Turbo UTVs. "We also started after the bikes, quads and trophy trucks," she notes. "This meant a very torn up course for us and very deep truck ruts... but that was to be expected." Nothing like eating the dust of 300+ entries and running a basically stock UTV in the longest desert race in the U.S. for a real trial by fire. "We wanted a light and simple race car for our first outing, so we went with stock suspension and only added the basic Best In The Desert safety requirements because we know what a great machine the Yamaha YXZ1000R is for this type of racing!" A twist for Day 2 was that all vehicles started in order of finish... that meant Trophy Trucks, buggies and UTVs were all mixed up. "This time, not only were we in the top 10 of the UTVs, we were running in the top 65 of all the cars and trucks," says Lacrecia. "Our DragonFire teammate Russell Griffin just beat us on time Day 1, so we started right behind Jimmy who was in the saddle for Day 2. Although we always wish our teammates well, we didn't want to be eating Jimmy's dust all day." There was no wind at the start and the dust was thick as the #1970 RZR of Keys took off. One minute later the #1924 Rockstar RZR headed out after the KeysCrete car. "We passed them quickly and tried to get some time between us. Just before we hit the pit, at Race Mile 100 a belt let go. As we struggled with a hot clutch and a bent clutch tool, we lost a couple of spots, including Jimmy in the #1970!" explained Lacrecia. Meanwhile, Corry Weller was on a mission, charging up through the pack on Day #2. "We finished 90th overall on Day 1, which meant we started ahead of a LOT of trucks and fast buggies that had broken the day before. Having smaller, slower UTVs starting in front of large, fast vehicles makes for some really sketchy situations - I was glad we had made a sturdy rear bumper on our YXZ! Tapping a bumper in desert racing is par for the course, but the UTVs and smaller vehicles are equipped with a blue strobe so that the larger vehicles know not to touch us. I think they all ignore that rule, and my neck is still feeling it..." Running with the big dogs did help Corry catch up to the front of the UTV field. In fact coming into the final 50 miles, the three DragonFire cars were in order on the track and made a charge for the podium. Dreams of an all-DragonFire podium will have to wait for another day, but at the end of the longest race in America, #1970 Griffin, #1924 Beurrier and #1870 Weller finished 5, 6 and 7! "Just to finish this race is a huge achievement, but to finish where we did is awesome, especially in a stock machine," adds Weller. When the silt settled, the DragonFire teams were topped by KeysCrete's 5th out of 34 in the Pro Production class UTVs; 10th overall out of 70 total UTVs (including the Turbos and three new Maverick X3s) and 62nd overall out of all the truck/car/UTV class entries. "Guess it really is true that three of a kind beats the two pair we had at the start of Vegas To Reno," says DragonFire's Brice Ginn. "We think this is a pretty good accomplishment, given that we run a bone stock motor," says Russell. "I just want to say, that without my team, and sponsors, this would not be possible. Just keep a watch out, we are going to give the ole girl a bath, and get her ready to give them hell at the Blue Water Challenge. See you there!" View the full article

Polaris Factory Racer Justin Lambert and his No. 1918 Cognito Motorsports RZR XP 4 1000 won the Pro Production class AND was the fastest UTV overall. Lambert and his team have been on an incredible run: currently on a five-win streak, including back-to-back Vegas-to-Reno wins and two overall UTV wins this season. 21. CORONA, Calif. (August 23, 2016) - Racing 647 miles over silt, sand and rocks requires driving skill, teamwork, and exceptional tires. Racing his #1948 Monster Energy Polaris RZR equipped with STI Chicane RX tires, âMonsterâ Matt Burroughs earned second place in the UTV Pro class and second-place overall among UTV racers at the Vegas to Reno Best In The Desert (BITD) race. â âWe basically had two flawless days of racing. Not a single issue. Itâs unbelievable that we raced our 32-inch STI Chicane RX tires over 647 miles of the nastiest rocks and silt imaginable, and not a single flat tire. Thatâs right, not a single flat tire. Simply remarkable!â Burroughs and co-driver Dan Lewis pushed early in day 1 of the two-day event through mostly sand and silt racing conditions. After the 4.5-hour race day, they held second place in the UTV Pro class. For day 2, the course covered rocky terrain on its way to Reno, Nev. With just over 7 hours of racing for day 2, Burroughs and the Monster team completed a grueling Vegas to Reno race with no flat tires or car troubles. With his second-place finish in this BITD race, Burroughs now holds second-place overall in the UTV Pro class for the 2016 season points battle. Congratulations to Burroughs, Lewis and the Monster Energy team for their second-place finish in the Best In The Desert Vegas to Reno race. STI-supported drivers Jonathan McVay (1952) finished 9th in the UTV Pro class, and Matt Hughes finished 10th, also running Chicane RX tires. The class had more than 30 racer entries. The all-new, bold Can-Am Maverick X3 X rs Turbo R side-by-side vehicle won its debut race just four short days after its worldwide unveiling in Orlando, Fla. Can-Am Maverick X3 X rsâItâs impressive to earn such a defining victory in our first official race with the new Maverick X3. The Murray Racing team was outstanding in the Nevada desert and their class victories continue to prove Can-Am is a clear leader in performance side-by-side vehicles,â said Jeff Leclerc, Racing Project Leader, Can-Am. âOur BITD racing teams started with the most race-ready platform in history, with the Can-Am Maverick X3. To top that off, we scored two huge first-in-class victories.â The Murray brothers lightly modified their Maverick X3 X rs vehicle with a Lonestar Racing cage, doors and bumpers and necessary safety equipment required by the BITD.
