With the shot pinion bearings bearings, it caused lots of play in the pinion which allowed the brake rotor to chatter against the pads creating a rattling sound. But these generally caused a rattling towards the rear. Just some possibilities to check out.

when decelerating  going down hill have a ratting noise  in the transmission   any thoughts
