  1. I said I was going to explain my starter swap, so here it goes... First off the top half of the starter would not fit. Whatever I bought (cheapest replacement on eBay $38) was too small up top and didn't line up with the 2 screw holes. I tried putting the old cover on top. But the new bendix (all the spring loaded gears that extend to contact the flywheel) was just a little bit taller than the old bendix and wouldn't fit without some heavy-duty metal cutting or drilling. Fortunately, the gear on the old bendix fit on top of the new starter. So I ended up installing and new starter (with new solenoid) but with the old bendix and old cover on top. (This pic is all the leftover parts. The new stuff was already installed when I took this picture.) After all this work was done, I realized the easiest way to do this job would have been to undo all the motor mounts on the bottom and raise the motor just an inch or so. I could have easily removed the 4 or 5 screws holding the shroud over flywheel and all that. I would not have had to remove the heat shields, exhaust, and all the other stuff I didn't need to take off. So the starter works better now but is not 100%. It still makes that hard "klinking" sound sometimes without moving the motor at all. Here's a pic of the flywheel where the starter is supposed to be... You can see how much dirt has gotten in there with normal daily use on our property. The flywheel looks rusty and corroded. There is dirt built up right where the bendix makes contact with the flywheel. So what could be causing my starting issues? Should I try a battery with more cranking amps? Should I try a new starter with new bendix and all? I've gone through 4 or 5 pull start cords over the last 4 months. They keep breaking! Could there be resistance somewhere else that's giving my starter such a hard time?? I would love to hear your thoughts...
  2. I think ours is supposed to be 14hp. Seems weak tho. If you ever tow anything... you might miss that twin!
  3. I already tried a new solenoid and it didn't help. I ended up taking the case AND the gears off the top of the old starter. The old gears fit and lined up with the sprocket on the new starter motor. So I just finished putting the starter in there and it worked! New solenoid. New bottom half of the starter. Old top half. And it worked! Now I need to spend half the night putting every little nut, bolt, and screw back on there so my kids can run it for chores tomorrow. Sure is nice to hear it run again! Thank yall for all the comments and advice. I'll try posting a few pics later to better explain what worked...
  4. I finally got the shroud off and the old starter out. Tried to put the new starter in... don't fit. The casing around the top of the starter (the part that contacts the flywheel) is too small. But the shaft inside the starter is too long to swap the casing that covers the starter. What can I do now? If I have to order another starter... how can I make sure I get the right one?
  5. Ok... So I've been trying to take my UTV apart to get to the starter. I've been working on and off for 3 days! But I've hit a wall. I have a Kohler CH440 motor. The starter is inside. I've gotten all the screws off the cover. I just can't get it off without moving the motor some. So here's my question... Is there some way to raise the motor just a few inches so I can pull the cover off the side? Any advice would be greatly appreciated...
  6. Actually no. And my kids are really upset. But we've got so many other little projects going on. I can't find 3-4 hrs to devote to putting in a new starter. I've got a Kohler motor in mine. And I haven't considered pulling the motor. But I'll take another look and see if thats something I can do. I will definitely post pics and a reply once I get er done.
  7. On my Kohler CH440 There are only 4 or 5 screws holding the shroud in place, covering the flywheel, starter, and all that. But the air intake has to come off and several other parts look like they need to get out of the way before I can actually remove the shroud to where I can see the starter. I will consider cutting the shroud whenever I'm done if it will let me get to the starter without having to remove all these other parts. I'll post an update whenever I get all this done. Thanks for all the info/advice!
  8. I'm sorry. I haven't fixed the problem yet. I still need to find time to take the whole thing apart to get to the old starter. I'll definitely update when I get the new starter installed...
  9. I found the service manual for the Kohler CH440. Page 83 has the exploded view of the whole thing. This will help me to see exactly what needs to come off and in what order. I'll let y'all know when I get a chance to take it apart the right way. Thanks y'all!
  10. This is what I bought. Looks like, in order to get to the screws that hold this starter in place, I need to remove the shroud that covers the flywheel. Anybody got any advice on the best way to do this?
  11. I bought this Starter/solenoid combo from eBay... but just to be sure... what does that $52.95 starter look like?
  12. Has anyone done a starter replacement on this UTV? I just need to find out what parts need to come off (and in what order) to get everything out of the way to replace the starter...
  13. I've seen that video. Once the 2 bolts are visible, replacing the starter won't be a problem. I pulled parts off for 2 hours today and never could get to where the starter was mounted.
  14. I attempted replacing the starter today. (It was $53 on eBay) I kept taking off different parts and finally gave up. I could not find the 2 screws/bolts that holds the starter in place. So my next question is... Do y'all have any links to threads or videos that can help me find the right way to replace the starter??

  16. Man... I don't know. Now that I look at the image again... looks like my starter and solenoid might be all ONE PART. But again, does anyone know of any other aftermarket parts websites where I can find this part for my 2018 Landmaster 450 2WD??
  17. Well, the UTV won't start again. The battery is fully charged. But all we get is a loud "clink" sound when attempting to start with the key. The pull-start works fine. Do y'all know where I can buy a Starter and Solenoid? It looks like my 2018 Landmaster 450 2WD has the starter and solenoid as 2 separate parts. But the American Landmaster website looks like they are "Out of Stock" with what I need. Any other aftermarket websites where I can find the parts I need?
  18. Well, it's starting fine now! Even in colder fall weather. But I think I'm going to buy a new solenoid if we ever have starting issues again. New question... We have an awful noise under the UTV. It sounds like some metal parts are loose! Runs fine but sounds awful. Is this normal belt/clutch noise on Landmaster UTV's? Or do I need to start taking it apart?
  19. Previous owner ran into something that bent the frame on the driver's side. Should we try to bend it back straight? I don't think a windshield will fit right if it stays bent.
  20. We just bought a used 2017 American Landmaster TW450 with a Kohler motor. It's got a great set of headlights! It's our first UTV! We couldn't be happier... We live in Vivian, Louisiana 71082.
  21. We just bought a used 2017 American Landmaster TW450. No hour meter that I can find, so not sure exactly how much it has been used. The first 2 days we had it, the starter was a little sketchy, but it started after 2-3 tries. Sometimes when turning the key, we would hear a loud metal "clink" sound. Like the starter made contact, but didn't have enough power to turn. THIS MORNING... Turning the key, we hear a single click sound. That's it. Even with a new battery, the starter is still doing the same thing. Both batteries (old and new) were reading 12.8 volts on volt meter. So I'm wondering what else could be going on? Any ideas on what to look for would be greatly appreciated... Thank you!
