  1. Well, I have went and done it! I bought a 2009 trooper T2 with only 320 miles and just got it last night! It looks totally new like it has never even seen a trail so am pretty excited. I am sure I will be on the board frequently with stupid questions so please bear with me. Unfortunately it will have to live it's first year outside (until I can save enough for an enclosed trailer) as we don't have enough room in my garage and the wife is not willing to let me use her spot ;) Is anyone aware of someone making covers for the trooper? I inquired about a custom cover for it at a local place, but looking at $300 for a non-waterproof and over $400 for a waterproof version which seems kind of steep. Also wondering if anyone has put a childs seat in the back (I have a 4 year old) and if so what seat did you use and how did you go about it (how did you mount it and where did you mount seatbelts).

    Any suggestions would be appreciated.

    Jeff

Hi Jeff nice to have you here on the forum, hope that you will have great times with your new toy. Everyone here is great and you will love this forum. Goodluck with your new toy!!!

  2. Thanks for the welcome! My T2 should arrive today. When it does, I will get pictures up. It is a 2009 trooper, I got 2 sets of tires with it, and a full cab with a heater. This will be great for hunting in montana. I live in Florence, just south of missoula on the western edge by Idaho. I am trying to contact the previous owner to find out what upgrades he has done to it. If not, the first thing i will do is the diffs, and a hinged hood. Other than that, I will know when I drive it.....Steve

Hi Steve its nice to have you aboard, this forum is great alot of good people here, always willing to help you!!! goodluck with your trooper I am sure you will have a great time with it. I know I do with mine.

  3. Does anyone know how many Troopers are out there?, I ask because if there are significant #s than maybe we will se the return of Joyner in N.America.

I wrote the factory last week asking them if they had any plans of coming back to N.A. I have not recievied a response yet.

I sure like the Trooper but I would think it won't be to long before critical parts will not be available anymore.

Secondly, does anyone have a simple test to confirm if the Diff upgrade was done in a Trooper?

I have the 09 but it still has the Electric 4X4 shift and when I put it up on blocks all the wheels can move back and forth 4 to 5 inches (slack) the rear being the higher number (5 inches slack approx_

    Thanks

    BC Trooper

Hi BC Trooper the way I was told how to check to see if your rear diff was upgraded is easy. Just lift the rear end off the ground so that you can spin the rear wheels and do not forget to put jack stands under it !!! then remove the diffs oil fill plug look inside the filler hole with a flashlight and you will see the ring gear bolts, if your diff wasnt upgraded it will only have 10mm bolts in it and will also have saftey wire going through the bolt heads. If your diff was upgraded it will have 12mm bolts in the ring gear and will have the bend up steel tabs so the bolts cannot come loose, the bend up tabs are really narrow and you will have to look hard for them. As you are looking at the bolts just turn the tire by hand to look at all bolts. I did it this way with mine and I could tell that mine was upgraded.

  5. Good morning stevozz,

Doing better after the bug I had last week.

I am using Castrol Syntec purchased at Pep Boys. I was using Royal Purple but too expensive. Used it once before the Castrol and I can't tell any diff.

    rocmoc n AZ

Glad to hear that you are doing better I had it about 2 weeks ago its wasnt fun at all, this bug thing I mean.

  6. The oil just gets too hot. The 2011 Troopers will come with an oil cooler to help. The gauge is probably ok as it shows OK when the engine is cool so it seems to be reading oil pressure. The pressure is just drooping from heat. Some of the others on here have added an oil cooler. You can get an adapter that goes between the engine block and oil filter to run the lines to and from for the cooler. I will also add a cooler when I get to it even though I may not need it anymore. My oil pan is a custom one I made out of aluminum so it disipates a lot of heat quickly. Low oil pressure should be a real concern.

    Lenny

Hi Lenny how are you today? I was just asking because it just started to do that, and right now the weather is alot cooler and my water temp gauge even shows that its running alittle cooler. When I was running it in the summer heat it never did what its doing now, and again its only sometimes, as soon as you give it gas its no problem. I just changed my engine oil and filter with mobil 1 fully syn 10w40 for the winter and then in the summer I will be putting in mobil 1 fully syn 20w50 because of the heat in Arizona. I am also in the middle of making test air scoops and ducting to also bring in air from the outside that will blow on the engine and also to keep the engine area cooler, at least I hope that it will work. I will never be done playing around with these things, I just love it. No I am not married so that is also a big help with having time to do this.

    Stevozz

  7. Im doing fine stevoz,I also use mobile 1 in mine.problem was it would just start cutting out as driving.it would not do it all the time and it would not last.I would stop rev her up a few times and it would be fine.sometimes it would do it 3 or 4 times while out for a ride and then again sometimes it would not do it at all.checked wiring, fuel pump, changed fuel filter, regulator, air filter, cleaned fuel tank twice, changed plugs, and still did it.I ended up changing ICU and since then i have had it out 3-4 trips now and no problems.

Glad it wasnt nothing major, but I am sure that you had alot of time into it. Yes I will be running mobil 1 fully syn in mine too, I really belive in fully syn motor oil. I already been putting it in my trans and both diffs.

    Stevozz

  8. I had mine just stop running and then it would run seemed for no reason. Ended up running a groung wire to the computer external cover and fixed it. Discovered it while looking for the problem. just happened to groung the cover while trying it and it started. When I ungrounded it, it wouldn't. I use Mobile 1 15w-50 synthetic also with a larger oil pan, 9 quarts, and a larger oil filter, about twice the size of stock. Oil pressure stays good now.

    Lenny

Hi Lenny, about the oil pressure sometimes on a ride I notice that sometimes I stop and leave it idle for alittle bit my oil pressure light flashes and my gauge is low. But that is only sometimes. How accurate are these gauges ? I am not to impressed with them at all. My camo one is doing it and I only have about 550 miles on it. Did you have that problem too?

    Thanks Stevozz

  9. It is one of the early ones with the gas tank up front. May even be one of the first 50. I can see it has the brake upgrade. Make sure it has the drive line upgrade. The orginal drive line had U-joints and was junk. The upgrade has CV Joints. You can tell it been in the moisture from the rust on the exhaust manifold. Looks like it does have some good mods & upgrades. My concern would be the electrical connections.

    Good luck!

    [/quote

I would also be worried about the dust and dirt that it may of sucked in through that stock air filter at least it looks stock. The stock air filters were junk!!!! and if it was in alot of mud and water I would also check the diffs out real good.

  10. like i said, i changed mine just looking to resolve the problem i was having.it made no differance and plugs were not the problem,(i could have just wanted an excuse to do something on it)dont tell the wife(LOL)

Hi Rick how are you doing? What was the problem with it cutting out on you?

    Stevozz

  11. On my Yukon, I got about 100,000 miles before I changed out iridiums, I have changed my Trooper plugs yet, how many miles do you have and how do your plugs look? My self, I'd stay with the iridiums, they don't seem to degrade very quickly, but I just hate changing things until I have too, then I put in what I think will last for ever and ever.

    Kinarfi

Hi Kinarfi how are you? My plugs seem to be burning good, Yes I think when I do replace them they will be ngk iridiums. Do you know if anyone uses mobil 1 fully syn oil in their troopers? If you ever come down to Arizona let me know, we will hook up to do some riding. That goes for everyone, as long as the timing is right. This thing called a job gets in the way sometimes. You take care Kinarfi and have fun on your trooper.

    Stevozz

  12. If you are having plug failure I would be looking other places for the cause. Today's plug should last 50,000 miles and I KNOW no one has put that kind of mileage on their Trooper. Can be anything from bad rings & seals to driving & operation style. There is a reason!

    rocmoc n AZ

No everything is ok I am just asking because I took the plugs out to see how they were burning and I just never heard of a torch spark plug before. I just wanted to know which plug everyone here likes so I can write it down in my log book. Because If I replace any parts I try to get different parts then using china made parts thats all. And I am also a ngk fan. Thank you for your input its always welcome.

    Stevozz

  13. Hi everyone, I hope that everyone had a great time over the holiday season. I see that there are a couple of different spark plugs that you can get for these engines. I know that the original plugs are iridium plugs. I am a ngk man and I see that the ngk iridium #bkr5eix-11 is among the list, would this be the best plug for this engine? what would you guys recomend? Thank you for your time.

  14. I haven't. Live in Southern AZ where it hardly rains except in monsoon season and you don't want to be caught out in a monsoonal storm. After it rains, the moisture is absorbed into the ground so quickly we rarely have mud. Thus far I have been successful keeping it dry. This is probably something I will address in 2011 as the rubbers are really starting to go.

    rocmoc n AZ

Hi Rocmoc, how are you. I also live in Arizona and loving it by the way. Yes the rubbers on these joyners are junk and not uv protected, my troopers are always garaged kept so they should last longer, but everytime I replace something on mine, I replace it with better quality parts ect. Thank you for your time.

    Thanks Stevo

  15. I haven't seen any real evidance that the problems have been resolved in a manner that I would accept however as Rocmoc said there are a number of owners that haven't had any problems. A lot of the problems were as a result of poor quality control and that isn't something that requires waiting for the next model year to resolve. That makes me think that some of the issues were progressively corrected. Correcting a design problem by making a poor design under better quality control helps reliaibility but it would take longer to fix with redesign. I sujest that you look at each of the problem areas, keeping an eye on them. That way, if one does show up you will catch it before it gets more serious. Some of the issues present potentially very serious safty concerns like the front ball joints sliding out or the upper steering column u-joint sliding off. On these 2 items, I wouldn't wait for problems to show. Instead I would pull the securring bolts out and check if they are actually catching the groove of the joint stud or just clamping the stud. Larger bolts may be required. I went to 1/2-20 grade 8 bolts on my steering joints and remade the upper steering u-joint shaft clamp. Mine were working fine until one day I noticed they were ready to fall out.

    Lenny

Hi Lenny thats for getting back to me on this, I try to keep up with mine. I know that late 09s the reat diffs were redone, I never knew about the front diffs having a problem, and the rear wheel bearings, which I may just change out, just because. What size are the rear wheel bearings do you know? I also think that the ball joints were fixed late 09s too but yes I will change the bolts in them and also on the steering column u-joint, just to make sure and will keep an eye on them. Again thanks for getting back to me. it was real helpful.

    Thanks Stevo

  16. This is a list of various problems Trooper owners have had with their machines. Not the fixes but the problem. It also includes additions and changes that have been made to make the machines more fun or easier to use along with some cautionary items and necessary survival requirments for repair or getting stranded. Once we get a good list, we can begin adding URLs to the "how to fix it" post. You can reply to this post with your input and it will be added to the list, and then, your reply will be deleted. Thanks for everybodys input.

Critical Safty Issues, It's pertinent you address these:

    Front ball joints sliding out.

Top universal joint of steering shaft coming loose.

General Issues but can leave you stranded ( excluding Wiring problems ):

Air filter must be replaced with a quality K&N type oil inpregnated filter. ( dust WILL get in and ruin the engine, worse if not snorkelled)

Rear drive shaft, older style with universal joints fails, should have been replaced by dealer in 08 & 09.

Gas tank design issues, runs out of gas on downhill and the side mount brackets fatigue and brake off.

    Starter not working:

Engine Temp gauge doesn't read accurately:

Differentials, both front and rear need gear alignmen, stronger big ring gear bolts and shimming:

Rear swing arm pivot tab holes elongate (shank of bolts not long enough, threads at pivot stress point):

Rear axel spindle mount tab holes elongate ( shank of bolts not long enough, threads at pivot stress point):

Engine overheats when run at higher RPMs:

4x4 selecter un-reliable, burns out or just fails to work, poor design:

Engine seems to have idle problems. Idle air controller (IAC) gets dirty or just fails ot work properly:

    Wiring Problems:

Wires to O2 sensor rubbing bare on radiator due to mount method (tyrap):

New Additions And Changes People Have Made to Make their Troopers easier or more fun:

    Hood hinging:

    Suspension changes:

    Tires, changing size or type:

    Power steering (electric and hydraulic):

    Storage additions:

    Muffler additions:

    Windsheild:

Fabric or metal top cover to provide sun shading:

Shimming the rack and pinion steering box to tighten steering and stop clunking noise (A few different fixes have been used):

Adding T-bar for passenger to hang on to:

    Rear view mirrors:

Isolated problems that just a couple of people have had:

    Transmission output shaft sheared:

    Differential locker stripping:

Differential locker shifting fork bent preventing lockout:

Fuel gauge and sending unit going bad:

    Rear wheel bearings failed:

Electric 4 wheel drive device fails ( it defaults into 4 wheel drive if removed so you can get back home):

    Alternator bearing bad requiring replacement:

Gas tank filler tube weld cracking:

Shiffter roll pin shatering preventing some gears from being available:

    Precautionary Notes:

Welding, never weld on Trooper without unpluging the ECM ( computer ):

Items That Should Always Be Included On Long Rides:

    Jack:

    Lug wrench:

    Spare tire:

    Repair tools:

    Extra gas:

If in challenging terrain, Extra line to extent winch reach:

Survival Gear That Should Be Mandatory On Long Rides:

    Partner with their own vehicle:

Water and way to carry it if hiking out:

    Survival food:

Communication devise if useable like cell phone or CB ):

Communications ( cell phone, radio, SPOT satellite tracker, GPS, ....)

    Good walking shoes:

    Jacket:

Solar Blanket ( for night time warmth, rain poncho, shade cover ):

    First aid kit:

    Common Rattle and Clunking Locations

Body panels (rubber washers between panel and frame helps a lot):

Aluminum plenum between fan and radiator:

Plastic panel below front of seats:

Clutch and gas pedal pivot points:

Steel panel over storage under driver seat (add cushion strip around edges):

All sheet metal and plastic panels in general (should be caulked around the edges):

The carbon can behind the passenger seat. ( add bracket to to bottom side )

Hi Lenny How are you? About all these problems that you addressed, are they for all troopers or the early ones. I have 09s just wondering if most of the problems were corrected on 09s or are they still a problem? Thank you for your time.

    Stevo

  17. 1) Upgrade the front and rear diffs with a $100.00 each kit(I have seen on ebay) that supplies , shims, circlip and some new bolts as well as instrcutions on how to properly align the diff gears. (Lenny on this site is our source for this upgrade)

    3) Weld some type of support bracket to the Rear End? ( Only necessary on the very early model, mine was one of the first 50. Later they upgraded the brace fixing the problem. If your brace is a piece of rectangle steel, you have the upgrade. Mine was round tubing like the rest of the trooper)

    7) Some kind of issue with the cables , crimps pulling off? what can be done about this? ( Again on the early Troopers, the cables on the shifters pulled apart on some of the Troopers. Mine never did but I have another set of cables just in case)

    8) Upgrade 2wd/4wd switch from electric solenoid type to mechanical (More of any issue if you get your Trooper wet a lot. I don't in AZ so have not had any problems. But just in case I have an extra solenoid)

The Rest is pretty much routine maintenance you would have to do on any UTV/ATV.

    Hope this helps,

    rocmoc n AZ

    Hi Rocmoc,

How did you waterproof you wire conections? I have whats called liquid tape its pretty thick and then dries to rubber will that work? maybe just wipe it on at the ends of the wires? also I am thinking about putting breathers on the ends of the diff rubber hoses to keep water out. Did you do anything like that? Thank you for your time.

    Stevo

  18. BC,

Welcome, glad to see you came over here to this forum. As i told you,you will get quicker response here.I know your having it shiped up to you are you sure yours does not have the upgrade already for the 4wd? Mine is a 09 also but luckily they did the upgrade here at joyner once it got here from china. They installed the manual lever on the dash(same as the diff locker levers).Good luck with your trooper,Im sure your going to enjoy it.

Goodluck on your new trooper, and happy trails, I love mine you will have alot of fun!!!
