Martinez Cabin and Coke Ovens near Florence

The first trip we took in the Joyner was to Martinez Cabin near Florence. Then we took the side trail to the Coke Ovens. About 5-6 hours of bone jarring rugged wheeling. Beautiful views.

Awesome, what's the story about those rock buildings? We have lots of collapsed ones that are similar here called Beehive houses that date back many, many years.

Do a Google search for - Coke ovens Superstition Mountains Florence, AZ, Martinez Canyon Superstition Mountains, Martinez Cabin Superstition Mountains.

The coke ovens were used by miners to burn Mesquite wood for days and make a type of charcoal called coke. It was said that it burned much hotter and was used in their smelting process.

This is a GREAT trip! I was cussing the manual steering towards the end of the day though! Some of the most beautiful AZ scenery- and you are a loooong way from help so make sure you have someone with you and are prepared. I did not have the Joyner 2 weeks when my buddy and I took this trip. Plan on a portion of the day to do the MartinezBox Canyon and the Coke ovens

Haven't been on this forum in quite a while - I loitered quite a bit when I was looking into purchasing a Joyner, but went a different direction.

In any case, I was recently out at the Coke Ovens, as well, and had an absolute blast. Great trip - well worth getting out there. I posted about my trip out there on a website I keep for sharing these trips with friends & family that can't get out with me: http://tomcarfun.com/Coke_Ovens.php

I didn't make it to Martinez Cabin - but I plan on getting back out there soon for that leg. I headed Right towards to the Coke Ovens, after passing through Box Canyon. Next time, I'll head left, towards the cabin/mines.

Lots to see out in that area! Many, many trails, and lots of interesting sites to visit.

Yep, that was a fun and exhausting day! We did the Martinez Cabin and then the Coke Ovens- the Joyner crawled over everything but the manual steering and suspension really beat the snot out of me. My buddy rode his Raptor quad and I drove the Joyner with his son as my co-pilot. We left Vail (southeast of Tucson) about 7am, took the Florence highway to turn off after the bridge right after the AZ State Prison. Did the Box Canyon, Martinez Cabin, hit McDonalds in Florence and were home by 11:45pm-long day.

My buddy got hung up trying to climb the rock steps on a very steep rock hill climb coming back from the Coke Ovens and I had to park the Joyner, get out and help him up the hill. Tough trip on a 2 wheel drive sport quad! Lots of steep rock climbs/descents and off-camber situations and loose rock.

I wouldn't do that again in one day. Next time it's one or the other!
