  1. One of the problems that kept us from taking the Jeep with us was my Jeep was leaning on the left side (lower on the driver's side) after everything was mounted; New tires, new wheels, new leaf springs, new shakles & new diffs. It also caused the Jeep to dive on the driver's side when you turned quickly towards the right. I couldn't find the cause and I was under a timeline, time was running out. I was too reactionary! While traveling and upon the return home, I told myself to slow down, think and measure. I have fixed stuff like this before. So today I took the time to measure and just lay under the Jeep looking at the frame. Inch by inch comparing left side to right side. THEN, I SAW IT! The frame supporting the front spring hanger on the rear diff on the driver's side was bent. I took a floor jack and lifted the frame at the location aprox the amount of the bend and sure enough the Jeep was nearly level. In one of my shops when I poured the floor I installed tie-downs in case I ever had a problem like this. I will tie her down, jack her up until the bend is gone. I will then box both sides so this can't happen in the future. Must have happened when the right rear axle came out on the previous owner. I never saw it as the axle was hanging out when I bought her. At any rate it is a good day when you solve a problem! rocmoc n AZ/Mexico

How do we get to our old messages of the last week? I have not deleted any but can not find them. What am I missing? rocmoc n AZ/Mexico
  3. Closed, gone, no more. Left everyone hanging, did not even tell the dealers. What Joyner Toys remained at HQ were sent to Auction and the building was raped clean of everything. A formally notice is suppose to be made this week and officially closed nest week. Not to worry as most parts can be found, only area of concern as expressed by Lenny and I agree, are the Diffs. More important than ever to take care of them and possibly upgrade if needed with Lenny's Diff Kit. We all now have Collectibles. Life moves on and our Troopers are still fun. rocmoc n AZ/Mexico

  8. Who says you can return to your youth? Late 1960s to early 1970s I bounced between Jeeps and Dune Buggies (now called Sandrails). Around 1970 I had a red 1965 Jeep CJ5 with V6, 3spd & Warn Overdrive. I have been looking for months and sucessfully aquired one last week only it is yellow. I was always sorry I sold that Jeep and now found a 1969 to replace it. Everything else is the same but needs a fair amount of TLC. THEN after also watching Sandrails for sale for months I found the one. Brought it home Sunday with only two of the rear wheels fitting on the trailer because of the width. With 6 straps securely tied down on the rear hoping it would not fall off the trailer and holding my breath for 1 1/2 hours, I made it home. After mods to the trailer, rebuilding ALL the CV joints and doing some badly needed maintence; we are ready for the first roadtrip, Coral Pink Sand Dunes. My old buggies can't compare because of the tech changes over the years. Plus at this age I have already added a silencer, did do much, & a spark arrester, didn't help much with the noise either. BUT the color is the same, my old one was yellow and so is this one. I think my new color is yellow, LOL. My rigs not me! I will be posting more detail repairs, mods & pics in the future. I am just excited to have a place on this site and still be with my friends. rocmoc n AZ/Mexico
  9. Still working on this darn roof so have not had a chance to work on the Trooper. SOOOO, I have had time to think about the upcoming repair OR should I replace the drivetrain with something with a lot more horsepower? IF you were going to replace the entire drivetrain, what would you replace it with, Honda, Subaru, ?? Also an Automatic trans would share be nice in the rocks like Moab! Also Lenny or Kinarf, did one of you guys have a chance to calc the drive ratio on the diff when you had it a part? If a person was going to replace the drivetrain, it would be important to come close to the final output ratio of the existing trans. Too quiet on here so something to chew on. rocmoc n AZ/Mexico

    Random questions

Yes my tranny always made noise when cruising down the road. If you are refering to the fan belt, it is fine. It will out last the rest of the Trooper. The clicking upfront on mine was the brake pads. Didn't bother me as my race cars always did the same thing. The Trooper doesn't have the little clips you install to stop the noise. rocmoc n AZ/Mexico
  11. All IMHO! First, $6000 is way too much for an '08. The '08 had to have a lot of upgrades. How do I know? I had one. Second, Don't buy a Trooper unless you like working on it almost more than you play with it. They are not reliable! Third, The clutch is great and is not a trouble point unless you don't know how to use a clutch correctly! Fourth, Lousy in the Dunes without a lot of mods & $. I had a Trooper & a second one for parts. Finally got tired of working on it and sold them. JMHO! rocmoc n AZ/Mexico

    opinion on bearings

I will say what others will not! Machining, plating or hub replacement is the only REAL fix. Kinarfi's fix is a really good bandaid! rocmoc n AZ/Mexico

    opinion on bearings

This is a problem I was concerned with way back when. The hubs are made from too soft material. Lenny had the best solution but you have to be a mechianist or pay someone. I chose to purchase spare parts when I could fine them. I replaced bearings, use red locktite but it never really worked. I don't agree with Casey on this one, loose means they will slop around and get even looser. I was wishing for a great aftermarket replacement hub but no one ever came forward. IMHO this is one of the greatest weakness in the Trooper, the hubs. Maybe the new ones are made of better stuff! rocmoc n AZ/Mmexico

    Opinions needed on parts.

I have posted my opinion before on here that there is no need to pay extra for a clutch setup in the Trooper. The factory setup is very good and most if not all problems (if someone is having them) can be found in driver misuse. When I had to pull my tranny I replaced my clutch but there was only a slight bit of wear on the old clutch. It was a waste of money & I still have it. If you search Lenny provided his opinion one time on the site. $30 & shipping, you can have my old clutch. rocmoc n AZ/Mexico

    Steering Upgrade!

Has anyone changed out the Joyner steering rack for a BETTER non-power steering rack & pinon? With only a few hundred pounds on the front, I can't imagine that a non-power unit of high quality won't work even with big tires. Exception would be possibly be when the locker engaged. Has anyone upgraded to a power steering unit with a different rack and tried to turn it with power turned off? Just wondering if anyone has tried. Thinking outside the box again! Some nice non-power rack and affordable, http://www.mooreparts.com/store/category/8/135/Rack-%26-Pinions/ rocmoc n AZ

    Update, Jeep!

Time for an update. First I added a pic to my gallery. The pic shows the following: My Jeep is a '70 CJ5 and they never had a fiberglass top for the CJ5. But in the late 70's a company named Acme came out with an aftermarket top, a great one! They are rare in the West & Southwest but can be found in the mid-west & east (snow country for winter use). There are changes that have to happen. A late 70's - early 80's windshieldframe has to be installed and a roll bar from the same time frame. I bought a '78 parts Jeep last year and kept the parts I needed & sold the rest. THEN I was lucky enough to see a Hard Top on Craigslist in Albuquerque, NM for a crazy cheap price. Luckily I have a really great friend that lives there. I bought it from the pics and my buddy picked it up. He stored if for a couple of months until I could pic it up last week. Installed it over the weekend and man o man am I PLEASED! Just what I wanted. Have not installed the doors yet as a couple of hinges are missing. Already working on that! Also installed the new/rebuilt trans & transfer case last week, now I have an overdrive an this setup had a Warn Overdrive. Trying to get that great mileage. I am not going to even worry about how it looks until next summer as the only thing important to me now is reliablity. It is going to Mexico twice this winter. Looking Good! rocmoc n AZ/Mexico
