Hi Team,

 

 I'm new to the Forum, and I'm looking for your help. I have a 2009 Yamaha Rhino 700 that has stopped consistently charging. Here are the specs and Info I can provide, the Stator and Regulator are new. The Stator does not have continuity to ground on all 3 wires at the engine bay plug. The stator puts out 15-17AC/V at Idle and 38-39AC/V at 2000rpm at both the engine bay plug and the regulator plug. The Battery regulator plug has Battery DC Voltage, when Running the regulator puts out Charging voltage 13.4-15V. I have upgraded/added ground wires from the primary battery to the engine block, from the stock ground wire bolt on the engine to the Chassis and from the secondary battery to the regulator grounding bolt/ground wire. Now the symptoms are it Charges when first started and will continue to charge while driving or at high idle until the machine returns to idle- it will not charge after that, this includes any RPM. If your shut the machine off and restart the process restarts -it will charge until returned to idle. The Machine has and RM Stator and Regulator and a Kimpex Flywheel. The last time it was driven it had an overheating event- unrelated to charging I think, but worth the mention.

 

Any thoughts would be helpful, I have the factory Regulator- it was working at the time of replacement- when swapped the same issues occur.

Tell us about your battery.  How old is it? Does it hold a charge? Have you tested it? Possibly, your battery is not accepting the charge for some reason. Are you testing the regulator and stator while under load or independently? (Back probing while increasing and decreasing rpms) with all components in circuit. 

This is food for thought,  but, im leaning more toward a wiring problem in the charging circuit. If the stator and regulator are new and working, the problem within the circuit should show resistance and voltage drop when back probing during operation. 

Specifically, how are you determining the system is not charging during idle? These problems are difficult and even more troublesome trying to troubleshoot online. Bear with me, I know some of these questions are basic and redundant.  You are the eyes and ears, we are trying to visualize what you are experiencing.

We need to know where the current is going or where it is bleeding off. Where specifically within the charging circuit.

The machine has 2 AGM batteries installed. Battery connections are clean on both batteries. When manually charged they hold and keep 13.1 volts, they are 4-5 years old but are regularly maintained and in heated storage. This unit can run for the better part of an hour NOT charging before starting is slowed.  Take this as note: the testing I have done for the stator is while running and unplugged, never back probed and tested at the engine bay and at the voltage regulator with the same results. The battery voltage is taken at the regulator plug while running- the plug disconnected voltage and battery voltage are the same, suggests no voltage drop on the wiring. That said I have not tried that circuit with a load like a headlight or two.  There are multiple extra ground circuits now, if there was a wiring issue I don't believe it to be on the ground side. When working the regulator, engine running is putting out charging voltage, 12.8-15.1V. The rhino dash has a battery gauge and I have installed and aftermarket Chinese Voltage gauge/USB point. The rhino battery gauge reads 0.4-0.6 volts lower than actual battery. I believe this is to be expected as the battery gauge runs through the Ignition switched relay. Anything else on this circuit could cause that drop including the relay. I can watch the dash and the aftermarket gauge read from charging voltage 13.1-15.1v then suddenly stop when the machine returns to idle and read 12.8, 12.6, 12.4, 12.2 as you continue driving. Again it will not start charging again until you turn the machine off and restart. It will continue to charge for ever until you return to idle. For example, I close the gate behind me, start the machine and run from one end of the section to the other, it will charge the whole time running down the field until i get to the next gate and returned to idle. It won't charge again unless I shut off and restart. The Challenge is that the circuit is so simple. 5 wires, 3 from the stator -A/C voltage, one Battery positive, and one battery negative. There is also one factory ground wire to the Regulator body bolted to ground and I have added an additional ground to that same point to the secondary Battery ground. Also note that the RM Regulator has a thermal switch, to shut down and let it cool if it gets hot. At this time I am running no loads. The factory Regulator does not have a thermal switch but gives the same results.

Thanks for giving this a go, I'm sure I have overlooked something obvious.

      Next problem with charging system to tackle, any help would be appreciated.
      New starter solenoid....check
      New Voltage Regulator...check.
      Dynamic test to Stator.....bang...pulling like 2 Volts AC
      Problem: Without pulling the part out and stranding the vehicle at the shop forever.... I am trying to find the correct stator or at least one that might not be exact for the Massimo Buck 400S, but fit and connect and do the job if that makes sense.... if anyone has any ideas, please shoot them my way.

      I posted this before , but I had the year wrong. The part I need is for a 2014, I don't know what all years will work, but I need the 2 bearing style with the spacer in the middle. It looks like this pic. If anyone has one I'll buy it rite away. my email is [email protected]. Thanks, RC

      Hope I posted this in the right place. Looking for the left side shaft carrier where the rear bearings go for an 1100cc sand viper, I understand an 800 cc carrier will also work. I need the old style two bearing with the spacer in the middle, the new style with just the one wide bearing wont work. If anybody has one I'll buy it right away. my email is [email protected]

      I heard there's several off road festivals out that way. One or two post apocalyptic, the rest just rev and run. Anyone know a good one that offers camping? Any advice for out of state people like hauling, legality, and where to stay?
      Ideally me and the missus would be down for camping out and setting up shop somewhere nearby. That way we can just wake up, load up, and ride.

      I have a 2021 Axis(Hisun) 700 from Lowes. Will not start. Checked starter, solenoid, spark plug and fuel pump. Everything seems to be fine. The motor turns over and will try to start but just will not. Battery is also good. Frustrated!
