Front axle driveshaft always turns

DIY

Recommended Posts

I just purchased a 2007 3010 Mule, and I'm checking all of the adjustments, when I noticed that when I'm in 2WD, and I push the Mule forward and backwards, that the front driveshaft always turns.  Should this be happening?  I would think that the front driveshaft would not rotate if the 2WD/4WD selector is in the 2WD position.  Are the front wheels turning this driveshaft in this situation and it isn't actually connected to the transmission?  If that is the case, does this mean that all of the axles and driveshafts from the front wheels, all the way to the rear trans-axle are always turning, even in 2WD mode?

First, welcome to the forum!

Never looked at mine, but when it's in 4wd it has a louder growl, that's very distinct.

Maybe try jacking up the whole thing, and see if those wheels turn after putting it in gear.

I will say this for certain though, you should definitely not drive on anything firm, while in 4wd. Those front ends are under a lot of stress when turning. They're supposed to be limited slip, but it's very limited. Use 4wd only on slippery surfaces. Of course this only applies to turning, and I regularly use 4wd on straight road, just to keep things lubed. Otherwise rubber seals can crack, and gear oil can get gummed up. Might help, might not, but it can't hurt. People who  regularly leave the unit in 4wd have problems.

I also don't shift to 2wd on the fly anymore. It's supposed to be okay, but I don't care for the way mine slams into gear. So I always stop, shift into 2wd, then reverse a couple of feet. When I take off there's no growl. So it's shifted gently into 2wd, without slamming. It shifts smoothly into 4wd though, so no problem there. There's a lot of people who have had carburetor problems from the high ethanol content in their fuel, so be aware of that. Buy a shop service manual, it'll come in real handy. Good luck with your new mule!

OK, so I jacked up the front end, rotated the front tires by hand, and all of the front driveshafts rotate, all of the way back to the rear transaxle, which I suspected would happen.  Looks like everything is OK in regards to that topic.  I could push it while jacked up on the floor jack, and the shafts for the front wheels do not rotate while in 2WD , but do rotate while in 4WD, with the front wheels off of the ground and the front rolling on the floor jack wheels.  All looks OK there.

I am looking for the front brush guard that was made by Off Road Body Armor.
They stopped making it to fit my 2023 Kymco 450i..
So if anyone knows where one is I would like to buy it.
      Thanks Gary

2016, Hisun 500 turns over great but Spark plug is firing when I turn the ignition key on. I’ve got good fuel pressure to the injector. Pulled plug out and it is wet with. gasoline. Air filter is clean. Turns over great just does not even try to pop or start.. I’ve checked off uses and they are good when I turn the key on I’m getting power to the injector.. I’m not hearing the injector pulsing, but may just be my hearing.. With the spark plug getting wet with gas I feel like the injector is pulsing and spraying. Any suggestions would be great. I don’t know the hours on the unit offhand, but it has 600 miles on it. Thank you for your comments and advanced.

Hopefully this helps somebody because I couldn't find any info on this runaway condition.

Drove 1/2 mile to the gas station and when I started up to leave the starter stuck on. Turn key off starter is still running~! Limp it home wondering what the heck to do, get it in the garage and pull the negative battery terminal to get it to stop. Whew, WTF?

Calm down and start checking things, starter is hot of course but nothing is smoking and nothing smells burnt. Pull battery cover off and start checking wires from battery to relay and relay to the starter. OK good nothing is hot, nothing is crispy and nothing is melted. Probably smoked the starter though. If this had happened to my wife and I wasn't around the machine would have run until the battery died and probably melted down/burned.

I'll get to the point to save you folks some time and trouble. Because this is a kymco machine you need 2 different Kawasaki parts to make this repair, and information is scarce to say the least. The switch and a sub harness to connect it to the machine's plug.

Everything works now, but the starter sounds horrible so I'll be changing that too before spring.

Good luck out there and hopefully this is just a freak occurrence, but if I were you I'd get rid of this kymco part and put the Kawasaki replacement in now.

Switch, Magnetic is part number 27010-0767
Sub Harness Start Relay is part number 26031-Y034

Recently acquired a 21 year old Mule.  The previous owner let the brake master cylinder run dry, and when I flushed the brakes, one wheel's brakes locked up.  I took the wheel off, but cannot get the axle nut off, and there is not enough space to get my gear puller behind the drum anyway.  Anybody had an issue with seized brakes?  How can I get this thing off to replace it or rebuild it?
