hauling a utv in bed of a full size pickup truck

I have a Polaris 900 side by side that I want to haul in the back of my full size pickup and still be able to tow my camping trailer.  The problem is that, although the side by side fits completely in the truck bed, the curvature of the rear tires stick out enough that I can't close the tailgate.  I cannot tow the trailer with the tailgate down, and I don't feel safe just removing the tailgate and relying on the tie-down straps to keep the utv in place.  They always bounce around a little and it would really suck having it bounce enough to slip out between the truck and trailer.  Any thoughts on a solution to this?  I also don't feel comfortable towing a flatbed trailer behind my camping trailer.  I've thought about getting a tailgate net to replace the regular tailgate, but I don't have any experience with them. Suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

There's bed extensions available on the aftermarket. It's made from tubular metal and adds about another 12" or more of additional capacity, but I don't know if it requires the tailgate to remain in place, or if you have to remove it.

The only other option I can think of would be to tie down the front and rear wheels firmly so it can't bounce around.

Don't know if this helps.

I hate to be that guy but if you aren’t comfortable towing with your tailgate down, you need to secure the machine better.   Use chains and ratchet binders instead of straps for example.  Two (one in front, one in the rear, pulling opposite directions) and cinched down enough to compress the suspension should be enough to carry you through any circumstances.   Toss a third strap over the top for good measure if you want.

It may feel strange carrying it with no tailgate but secured properly it won’t go anywhere

Trucker for over 50 yrs here. Put the front wheels firmly against the front of the bed, put chocks under the wheels, angle your tiedowns so they are pulling down and slightly forward. Your machine will not move. Take off the tailgate and pull your trailer.

Thanks everyone.  I think Pop Bob the trucker is right, and I'm also going to install some square u-bolts on the front of the bed to add one additional ratchet strap around the frame.

To Joe Colman, it's not that I'm uncomfortable towing with the tailgate down, it's that without the tailgate up and latched, it would hit the tongue jack on the trailer, and even without a tongue jack, the turning radius, without jamming the tailgate into the front of the trailer, would be next to nothing.  I do use ratchet straps pulling forward and back on both sides, and with this 3rd one across the front, I'm thinking I will be good. Thanks again for all the great input.

I bought a 2017 Stampede 900 last fall that was new, old stock with less than 5 hours on it thinking that I would be getting a relatively trouble free UTV as compared to buying a used Polaris or CanAm, or Honda, etc. It's been a little quirky, but reliable. What I thought was just a minor issue with this model, the difficulty in shifting between R, N, L, H, etc., was just a characteristic of this model is now a big problem. I had to climb two very steep trails to get to the upper meadow of our hunting property, which seemed to stress the UTV more than usual since I was carrying some lumber to work on a platform for a hunting blind, and when I went to shift into park, I felt something give and it would not shift out of low, but it did move up into high gear.  I couldn't get it to shift at all at that point and the shifter felt mushy for lack of a better word. I was able to get it down to the lodge and when I investigated, I discovered that the straight, metal tube portion of the shift cable had bent to almost 90 degrees (see pics). I'm positive that it had already had some deformation that had happened previously and it had the right amount of resistance to bend to the point where it was unusable.
      I have two questions:
      1. I suspect that there must be some other issues that makes this UTV difficult to shift, and I'm wondering if this is a common problem and if someone could enlighten me on what could cause this to be difficult to shift?
      2. Have any of you had this happen and if so, how difficult is it to replace the shifter cable?
Any other advice is welcome, this is the first UTV that I've ever owned, so I don't know much about working on these or maintaining them. I'm relatively capable when it comes to working on my own vehicles in general, and I'm not afraid to take things apart and get my hands dirty.
Thanks in advance for any insight, I'll be traveling most the day so I won't get a chance to look at replies until this evening.

I just purchased a 2023 Honda Pioneer a couple of weeks ago and had the hard roof and a front Honda Pioneer windshield installed at the shop before taking ownership. As things are drying up here in NC, the grass and dust are beginning to fly right through the back of the cab while driving. I was wondering if anyone has any good recommendations on rear windshields, dust panels, or mesh screens to help stop this?
      Thanks a lot!

Hope I posted this in the right place. Looking for the left side shaft carrier where the rear bearings go for an 1100cc sand viper, I understand an 800 cc carrier will also work. I need the old style two bearing with the spacer in the middle, the new style with just the one wide bearing wont work. If anybody has one I'll buy it right away. my email is [email protected]
