Nikola Powersports releases all-electric UTV

Recommended Posts

Nikola Powersports has finalized the specifications and design for the four-seater UTV dubbed the Nikola Zero. The Nikola Zero UTV is an all-electric, 400-volt plug-in, off-road and potentially street-ready vehicle. Dealerships can begin reserving production units starting in January. Starting at $35,000, the UTV will come with two performance options: 415 hp and 3,675 ft. lbs. of torque and 555 hp and 4,900 ft. lbs. of torque.

The UTV will also have three battery options: 75kWh, 100kWh and 125kWh, with the largest battery option giving the Nikola Zero more battery storage than a Tesla P100D. The 125kWh battery package can deliver 200 miles of range in 4x4 off-road mode.

“The Nikola Zero will be the first UTV to come with optional Anti-Lock Braking Systems (ABS), stability control, anti-roll-over, traction control and torque vectoring. Normally these options are reserved for high-end sports cars and not normally found in UTVs. We have worked hard to make these UTVs street legal, and in many states, you may be able to drive the Nikola Zero UTV to work,” said Trevor Milton, Nikola’s CEO.

“Once you test drive the Nikola Zero, you will want to trade in your current UTV. No other competitor UTV can match the Nikola Zero’s performance. We are not talking about a few seconds faster than the competition, we are talking about laps faster, with speeds up to 0-60 in 3.9 seconds with four passengers inside,” added Milton.

Standard features include: 100-percent electric power steering, 20-inch front and rear suspension travel, 14-inch ground clearance, 62-inch wide frame, four independent electric motors, 32-inch tires, bead lock wheels, tow hitch, over the air software updating, 10-inch infotainment center display, 7-inch instrument cluster, multiple color options, IP 67 waterproofing, LED headlights, taillights and custom seats, all with a two-year warranty.

Optional features include: 555 HP upgrade, street legal package (some states), 4x4 torque vectoring system, ABS, anti-roll protection, traction control, front and rear 4500 lb. winches, factory audio system, 15 kW power export at 110/220V, 4kW Solar 400-volt DC Charger, LED interior lighting, rider profiles, front windshield, mirrors, cameras and a four-year extended warranty package.

A dealer ride and drive event is being planned in December in St. George, Utah. Dealers can contact [email protected] for applications and to attend the ride and drive event. RSVPS are required.

Besides the price, I'm wondering how heavy that ride will be. Their site says 2300-4400 lbs depending upon [battery?] options.  I don't think any owner will be going airborne with this ride.  I would presume the basic charging package comes with it, but maybe not.  But if you want a 3 hr charging package, it's extra, it's a genset.  It's got a 14" ground clearance (that's good).

    • 2019 New Nikola NZT Electric SSV 590 hp

Nikola Motor launches its all-electric UTV with up to 150 miles of range Nikola Motor, a Utah-based EV startup, best known for their hydrogen fuel cell electric truck, launched their all-electric UTV with up to 150 miles of range this week. Last month, I had the opportunity to be among the first people to experience their prototype for the new off-road electric vehicle and I came out of the experience fairly impressed. You can read my report here: ‘We tested an insane electric UTV with more energy capacity than even the most powerful Tesla’ But this week, Nikola Motor, or more specifically its sports division ‘Nikola Powersports’, officially launched the Nikola Zero UTV, which has been renamed ‘NZT’. The prototype that we tested didn’t have any body panels, but the company has now released a bunch of new images showing off the final design. We could only share a few pictures of our experience with the vehicle in the desert in Utah and couldn’t do justice to the ability of the vehicle to conquer the impressive terrain in the Utah desert. With the launch this week, Nikola released a cinematic video filmed at the same location that should give you a little better idea of the capabilities of the electric UTV. The company has also worked out the lineup of NZT variants that will be offered: “Nikola has expanded the NZT lineup to include four models; NZT 440, NZT 352, NZT 280 and NZT 198. The numbers represent the kW output of the UTV, with the NZT 198 starting at only $28,900 and coming in at 2,300 lbs.” The different versions are based on the number of motors and the capacity of the battery: 75kWh, 100kWh and 125kWh. We tested the top-of-the-line version with 4 motors and the highest capacity battery pack, which was actually 107 kWh for the prototype. Last month, Trevor Milton, founder and CEO of Nikola Motor Company, told us that the fully equipped NZT will cost closer to $55,000. He commented on the launch yesterday: “With 0-60 mph in the three-second range, the Nikola NZT is the most powerful production UTV ever built. It outperforms many high-end sports cars and comes with features like electric power steering, 33” tires, 20” of wheel travel, anti-lock brakes, stability control, anti-rollover, traction control and torque vectoring. Once you drive one, you will sell every gas-powered UTV you have and join team Nikola.” Nikola was already taking reservations since announcing the vehicle last year, but the company now says that they are reimbursing all the deposits and taking reservations again but without any required deposit. They expect to start production “in the fourth quarter of 2018 with deliveries to dealerships for Spring 2019 sales.”

    • 2014 Joyner Renegade/Trooper Engine RPM vs Vehicle Speed in 5th Gear

If any of Joyner owners are out and about, could you please let me know what your engine RPMs vs Vehcile speed is when you're in 5th gear?  My Renegade sounds like it's wound up real tight when traveling.  For instance, I get about 10 mph per 1,000 RPMs while in 5th gear (45 mph = 4500 RPMs).  Is that normal?  I'm used to lower RPMs.  Other ATVs & UTVs running round my neighborhood that sound like their engine RPMs aren't that high.

Chad quickly realized the machines had real performance potential by applying race-worthy parts. He wanted to apply the principles of custom Trophy Truck designs to his RZR. Back in 2007, Chad was running a Trophy Truck team and it was there that he first met Danny Gormican. Danny has designed and fabricated for top desert racing teams as well as vehicle aftermarket products.
