  1. Thanks for the support! Today I rigged a bar to the motor/gearbox I have and measured the pull at about 12" and got 13 pounds as it stalled, the power supply I was using started at 13.6 volts but dropped to 5.6 and around 25 amps stalled. One more advantage to using bicycle chain and sprockets is that they are easy to change allowing for changing gear ratios so you can dial it in. Also, this is starting to look like an easier setup than I thought at first. The attaching the sprockets to the steering shaft shouldn't be to bad except for centering accurately. Any way, this is starting to get past theory and may be physical soon.
  2. Myself, I'm staying away from Hydraulics. I know and understand electrics. I have 2 toy motor/gearboxes coming and just waiting their arrival. We have a good alternator on our rigs and wiring an electric assist will be the easy part.
  3. While I was talking to Randy at Midwest, we talked about backdrive, that's the output shaft driving the motor should power fail and it would add drag, but not that bad, as expected. A cheap method, less than $30 for the motor and gears, would be the use of peg-perego motors, http://tigerimports.net/sunshop/index.php?...t_list&c=14 or Power Wheels motor but the down side is the bulk and it's plastic and it a toy, but costs less than 10%. But it is strong.
  4. My son who is into offroad racing says King shock are the #1 shock that you'll find on most Baja Desert Racers and arguably the best quality out there, they cost that much because they are designed to finish the Baja 1000 on a race truck or buggy. http://www.kingshocks.com/news.php
  5. Wow, that is some price!! Also, notice the fenders and the shield for the instrument panel.
  6. Hey everyone, need input, next time you go out driving, see how long it takes to turn your steering wheel from center to lock, trying to figure out how fast of a motor to use in designing an electric assist power steering. Kinarfi
  7. Yea, too bad about the trailer, You should probably start over on a new one, of coarse you can give me the old one that my Trooper will fit perfectly since I didn't change the size of my tires. Just kidding, one of my next projects it to set my trailer up for camping on.
  8. I just got back from a 2 day drive around White Rim, Canyon Lands, in my Yukon with my son and our wives. My boy and his wife rode motorcycles and I drove the Yukon, They won't let ATVS or OHVs in. Any way, I'm pretty sure I can find a break in the TV schedule and scrape together some funds and make it down to see you all, definitely worth any expense. Pretty certain that you can count me in.!!!!!! Let's do it before it gets too hot down there.
  9. Went for my first ride of the year and everything worked great, the steering box shim was most impressive and I think it actually helped with bump steer, everything was tight and the feel was instant, again, I recommend it, highly now! The tires were great, and the fuel tank set up worked like it was supposed to and I did plenty of long down hills and up hills with less than 1/2 tank. One glitch, the cruise control set up I put on kept dropping out, it would work for a while and then let the throttle go to idle, still working on it. I went by myself, so I kept it close to home and went just the other side of Utah Lake, Kinarfi
  10. Sounds like you might need power steering or an electrical power assist system and a can of ether starting fluid added to your machine now. Sound awesome, I was planning to check my rig out today, but I guess I'm gearing up to go to Moab with my son Friday, can't take the trooper because they don't allow ATV/OHVs in the park. Got my street legal license plate yesterday, $103, and the people that did the inspection are trooper people too, Utah Diesel Center here in P.G., and they commented about how solid my steering was, because of the shim I put in and said they had turboed theirs and what if difference. Looking forward to your photos. Kinarfi
  11. I'm still waiting for warm weather so I can go test my modifications, especially the steering, so far, it turns better, equal left and right, don't know for sure if I'm getting any tighter of a turn, but I'm sure I am in one direction. It feels tighter also and smooth too. I'm sure the shim I put in between the cap plate and the rack has helped and I recommend it. One concern I would have about changing racks is rack travel versus steering wheel rotation. The trooper can go much further than needed and must be adjusted to prevent going to far because of the CVs. I think what we have is pretty good. IMO The red areas appear to be where the pressure on the box happens, mine had galled and showed signs of wear, I don't believe that aluminum makes for a good bearing surface, so the shims I installed should make a better bearing material. As I put thicker shims in, could feel the hard meshing of the gears. Also as the rack pushes on the tie rods, they push the rack upwards and without the shims, the upward movement becomes play in the system. Kinarfi
  12. "I think free is really good." It's excellent!!!! I was thinking, if he sends 4 sets,.....oh never mind, I got new ones in and don't wanna do it again.
  13. I don't know you yet, but I don't think I would have put it that way. The fact that they were on and it wasn't your fault, if I remember, does away with the Dumb part. Any way, have you had any trouble with them loosening up as you drive, It was a constant problem for my wife and I, and since we only used the lap belts and they were always getting loose, I replaced them. 14. Your so right! we are all a little strange/different, ain't it fun , actually, I haven't used the shoulder straps at all yet and carry them in the buggy so I don't lose them and in case I think I need them, I just put them in the photo to show how I modified them to work with my new seat belts, which I replaced because the stockers wouldn't stay tight. kinarfi
  15. I don't get radical enough and at 6'4", there's not enough room for me to slide down any way, so I figured I didn't need it, but if I do decide to put it in, I can just loop it down through the hole with the stock adjustment buckle.
  16. Here's how I fixed my seat belt and the attach point, I replaced the belt and modified the shoulder straps, no submarine strap. Cost $32.00 + shipping.
  17. Did some more checking today, the tach signal is definitely square wave and has 2 cycles per revolution, thus at 900 rpm, idle, it cycles 1800 times per min or 30 Hz, here is the plug that handles the signal. I think it was a gray wire, but that's from memory!
  18. Here's what I came up with for a Jack, handle, and lug wrench. Jack is 16" when up, lug wrench is 11/16"
  19. Got it plumbed and pumped, if you do something similar to this, fill the surge tank from the top, if your pump doesn't have a good check valve built in, the tank will drain back into the main tank unless you put a check valve in like I had to. I epoxied a magnet to a piece of float and put it in an aluminum tube and epoxied reed switches to the side, the epoxy protects the fragile little switches and keeps them in place. As the level drops in the surge tank, it trips the lower reed switch and turns on the pump and in about 1 minute when it gets to the top, it trips the upper reed switch, turns off the pump and the surge tank is full again, about 1 gallon added. 20. Lenny, the tach & speed signals are square waves. I'll check to make sure after a while and post what I find, I have to take my laptop down stairs and use it as an oscilliscope. Everyone, Open this PDF and save it to file for future use. Here's the pins for the output signals from the computer. kinarfi attachment removed 5-14-09, needed the storage space, if it comes back it will be in the parts and pieces post pinned to the top of the first page, in the mean time, PM me with your email address.
  21. 11/16 will also work, fits a tad snugger than 18 mm but that's good if you haven't buggered the lugnuts, I had a spare 11/16 deep with 1/2 drive and welded it to an old tire iron that I cut the head off of and ground the end down square. photo of wrench and jack coming. kinarfi
