I'm thinking I'm not too into the tube trunk thing above the engine on the trooper so I'm considering building a pick up box for the trooper something like the polaris ranger have. I think it would make a unique trooper what do you guys think?

Have it been done?

Your pickup box idea sounds pretty neat.

yes it has. There was one on craigslist not to long ago. They had a box off a commando on it.

Here's what I did, works great for me and the wife, got another box up front too. Carries the jack, saws, blanket, sweat shirts, paper towels, wipees, my canes, emergency and some other stuff. Bought a couple sheets of Coraplast to make it out of, it's lasted 2 years so far.

Kinarfi that's a nice box i was thinking about whole box instead, ricksrb i never saw that trooper with commando box on it but i googled up commando and saw box it looks good but i want barely bigger box but the tail lights would be mounted the same location as commando box but more recessed in the box to protect the taillights because i broke one already

I finally broke down and went bought an plasma cutter and borrowed my buddy's miller welder and used my old fuel tank standing frame for outdoor that been sitting in grasses. Anyways i got started on the basic frame work.

Its planned to be 51 inch wide and 42 inch long and about 16 inch tall not sure about height completely yet though

I also decided to go with a pickup box. Should be done today so I'll post pics. I wanted to have more room for my dogs to ride especially when I take extra water and survival stuff with me on remote rides.. I had forgotten that nocturnalsixer had thrown out the idea some time back so I can't take credit for any original thinking. Maybe at the next Jamboree, the two of us can carry extra food and tents and camping gear so we can get really in deep. Now all we need is someone to make a tanker trooper to carry a couple hundred gallons of gas.

Lol lenny, are you doing tailgate also? How big will your box be?

I have one or two ideas on that...might be removable or hinged. I just got up so I'm relaxing before i go back in garage and clean up metal etc then go town get sheet metal and lay it on the skeleton then black sand blast it and clean then paint it and also its going to tilt like stock hood to make unloading much easier

Also I'm going to leave lip on top of inside the box for few reasons...... #1 Tie down points and #2 a great surface for me to lean on and rest arms on same time and #3 hopefully help keep stuff inside box.

Box is 55" wide by 43" long and about 10-1/2" deep all inside dimensions. Yes I have built a hinged tail gate that opens like a pickup does. When the tailgate is open, my bed length extends to about 57". I didn't make the box to swing up like in dump mode. I did however make mine so I can remove it in about 10 seconds literally. It's also quite lite weighing in at 53 pounds. I have an aluminum frame with stained cedar board floor and siding. I wanted the look of the old wood sided pickup truck. I have tie down loops welded to the vertical aluminum post. As far as holding things in, rocmoc said he would ride back there to hold things in when I go thru the woops.

Rocmoc riding in back lol i hope you got a crash seat for him to strap in at least.

I'm curious how you did tailgate i still am stumped on that and also I'm trying to decide on taillights if i want use the original mounted recessed into the box or different one completely

Tail lights, go LED, http://good-times.we...104282158MVvWow I also have 10w LED back up lights that really really work good.

Very nice set up the back up lights for some reason look reddish to me in video...is it actually white?

I was actually kicking around led trailer taillights probably more slimmer one but not sure yet.

Did u needed to add any resistor inline to make leds work?

Those were white lights, but there gone now, the ones I have now are only 1" in diameter and several times brighter than the ones in the video. To get the tail lights to blink like mine do, you need to ad a circuit to the lights,(exclusive or gate), it's the next 2 pictures after the video, I'll try to remember to get a photo of the backup lights if you want.

My progress so far...sheet metal is impossible to find anywhere on weekend i guess i should had planned ahead but at least i can get precut premeasured sheet metal and just weld it in place

I had been running all over cities (few) looking for sheet metal so not much got done... I plan on finishing mounts and brackets for front secure down the box/old hood then metal hinge legs for the rear hinges to tilt the box then another little legs bracket to hold hydraulic strut on to the box so it can be assisted tilt like stock hood.

Then the whole taillight assembly will be removed it interferes with operation of the box tilt.

How much brighter are those new back up lights? I want something like spotlights on back of my "brute trooper"

"Brute trooper" everyone might ask why...because my trooper don't look pretty and get the job done and its no trailer queen i put 1500 miles in only 3-4 months and used it for pulling a lot of heavy metal and my full size 4x4 and small trailers it keep impressing nee

here's a couple of videos and some photo, taken during the daytime, morning hours, but look at the guy in green shirt as the light comes on and off.

not sure the camera does justice, Samsung Galaxy, probably over corrected for the brightness.

Also, the last two in the series are how I changed my bed hold downs after they original loop broke. I tapped the holes in the round piece for 1/4-20 and the catch is a piece of 3/4 L with a nail welded to the edge

Got my pictures for you guys to look at. The frame is all aluminum and the wood is plained down cedar fencing slats from Home Depot. I plained it down to about .400" thick to smooth the surface and eliminate some weight. The whole assemble weighs 53 pounds. You will see one picture showing a tab sticking up from the frame behind the seats. there are two of these, one on each side. The box has two 3/4" tapered pins on the front of its frame which slide into these tabs. This is what holds the front of the box securly in place. The pins are tapered so that they slide in until they wedge tight in the holes so there is no play to cause rattling. The rear of the box is held down and slightly forward into the pins by the original toggle type draw clamps that were used to hold down the front of the original deck. The front panel of the box is slotted so I don't have to remove the intake filter to get the box off. This slot uses a velcroed foam pad that seals off the slot from the front. All wood is screwed down along with construction adhesive being used at all joints between wood members and also wood to frame. The counter sunk washers used under the screws are hollowed out on the under side so that the outer edge of the washer digs into the wood capturing the wood around the hole preventing it from spliting as easily happens when just using screws. The surplus tail gate chain stores in the hollow aluminum vertical corner post. The post has a slot down its back top side to slide a link into at what ever length is needed. I can remove the box in literally 10 seconds. I wanted to be able to remove the box quickly in case of fire so I can get at the engine comparment fast. I had one fire already and nearly didn't get it out because I couldn't get at it. There are 17 pictures in all so click thru them.

The box look very nice, maybe u should enter your trooper in a 4x4 show i bet u are a shoo in for a trophy haha.

My box will be painted but sadly it won't be a work of art like yours but that's ok ill just really destroy my box lol.

Also lenny and Kinarfi i don't know why or if it's just me but when i click on your photos you posted on this thread i see small pictures not full sized ones. Are those hosted off-site?

Lenny,

also what kind of fire was the first engine fire? Electrical or fuel?

I think that's a great idea be able to remove it so fast, i plan on getting longer hydraulic assist struts to allow the box to tilt much further back and i plan having fire extinguisher in my reach after i heard about your fire. I didn't think about having a fire extinguisher onboard until u mentioned your trooper fire.

Kinarfi,

I saw the video and yes the back up light seem real bright in the video with guy with green shirt.

I'm such a cheap chump lol i went and bought pair of regular "tail, turn, and brake" signal complete $5 each at farmer store lol now i just need get back up light or eliminate those and figure a way to mount it on box itself or out of harms way somewhere else.

At first i was thinking about having lights on side of box like classic trucks but i quickly decided that stuff will be hitting on it so i want it tucked and out of way.

My fire was neither electrical or fuel. My parking brake is on my front drive shaft just ahead of the transmission. It 's a disc brake from a motorcycle with dual calipers. Having it on the drive shaft gives me a big mechanical advantage because of the differential gearing. It holds no matter what slope I'm on and no matter if I'm going forward or backwards. When its in 4x4 i'm holding all 4 wheels. Anyway, I used too small of a master cylinder and had to adjust it real close to get enough stroke. As a result, i adjusted it too close and when the handle was all the way down it wasn't letting the master cylinder come back enough to let the fluid pressure relaease all the way. As a result, It was draging slightly and on a long fast run, It got hot enough to boil the brake fluid and get the rotor so hot, it started a fire. I carry a fire extinguisher but it only lasted about 10 seconds. I didn't know they ran out so fast. The fire went out but just flared back up again when the extinguisher was out. I carry 5 gallons of drinking water when out on long rides in case I get stranded in the desert. My wife immediately started filling bottles of water which I used to squirt on the fire. Eventually I got things cooled down enough to stop it. Now I not only carry a fire extinguisher but I have added a sure-flo RV water pump. It's mounted on the side of my 5 gallon water cooler with a 15 foot piece of hose with adjustable nozel. I can quickly set the cooler out, plug in into a 12v receptical on the dash and I get about 4 minutes of water flow. I also switched the parking brake fluid to dot5 which takes as lot more heat to boil. Got to thinking that if I would have started a 10 million dollar forest fire, my insurance wouldn't be enough to cover it and I could be cleaned out financially. I'm too old to want to think about that anymore.

Thought id update my page with my progress

I chopped up the traction slapper bars for muscle cars into hinges and latches for the box.

Now i just gotta build a latch catch on front of box to secure the box down and then mount the taillights on and build a tailgate and paint it

That looks like a good solid job. Makes me want to plan a gold heist. Shoot, I bet we could get a good couple of ton in that box and it would easily hold it. Good job.

Rocmoc, thanks and, if everyone else would carry my gear then sure ill carry the heavy stuff as long as i don't get top heavy.

Lenny, thanks also only way ill go on gold heist is if i can go back into 1880'S with the trooper then sure i don't see what would stop us except for the legendary cowboy shooters like Wyatt Earp or likes of him lol.

Yes, http://community.webshots.com/user/TrooperFolk It's an account I created prior to UTV Boards improvements that allow for photo being uploaded directly and if you want, I'll share the user name and pass word with you. but up in the right box, there is a view full size place to click on and if you like, there is also a slide show button.

All mid 2008 through 2014 Polaris RZR 800 series have a big problem with the rear differential pinion nut backing off, allowing the pinion gear to shoot into the rear differential, destroying the rear differential. This has happened with machines with as little as less than 100 miles on them! Reports indicate that there are no problems, nor warnings, until the rear differential grenades, locking the rear axles solid! This requires the machine to be lifted onto a trailer, to be transported for rear differential replacement, as it destroys the case. After failure, rear differential replacement can be quite expensive: labor alone can run from $800-$1200 and a new OEM Spicer rear diff, if you can find one, can run from $1700-$2500! So, if you own any Polaris RZR 800 series between the years of 2008-2014, I recommend that you do this repair before further use of your machine. personally, I have grounded my machine until it can be done. Please check the online post for your own awareness.

Hey all, I was just wondering what you guys consider a necessary upgrade or spare part to have or mod onto your machine.
I'm going for a kind of shtf survival rig that's not going to be SUPER heavy and I'm looking at getting:
A spare belt (I keep seeing this mentioned everywhere I look so it must be important)
A spare tire and mount( So would I need a jack like one from an old jeep or something else?)
      Tire chains for the winter
And maybe a cargo bed upgrade so things don't slide out.
      Bumpers because duh.
I already installed high output lights and have a windshield, roof, back window, and winch. And I outfitted a Molle panel for the back of my passenger seat with extra supplies like food, first aid, and spare mags.
Any advise on increasing durability, longevity, and having something on hand because it's absolutely necessary would be a plus.
      Thanks so much!

Hello all. I have a 2005 Joyner sand spider 650 with the dreaded broken output shaft on the transmission. I got ahold of a 2007 joyner commando 650 for cheap that had a bad motor but a good transmission. I got it because everything i read said that the transmission would work but it seems that it will not. Due to the commando being 4x4 it has a selectable locker and a small ring gear using a "idler" gear to turn the ring gear which make the output spin the wrong direction. Is there any way that I can make this thing work? I really dont want a commando,  I like the buggy but if the trans wont work then I can only put my motor in the commando. Any help would be appreciated. I have the ring gear from the original trans but the shaft is broken and the shaft from the commando wont fit the ring gear it doesn't appear.

I swapped out the Subaru motor for a Predator 670cc. If I remove the heat shield around the muffler, The stock muffler sits in there just fine with 1" to spare.
Only problem is the exhaust exit is toward the back seat instead of out the back.
Do you all think that the stock exhaust would be okay (just as effective) if cut a hole and welded a pipe on the reversed (opposite) end? Of course, plug the old exit end. Other option I thought of was to roll a tube 180° with a 7" center line radius and finish extention of 12" or so.
      Any thoughts?

Just bought new 2024 AODES 650 work cross 2 seated for my dad and he's very resilient at 79 and still cuts trees, splits and hauls firewood for heating home. He's begun using Polaris ATV with wagon more over his 80's toyo4x4 flatbed after the wood has been split. I figured UTV would be easier, more practical at times and more fun. It does not have a heater and would like suggestions on one that best suits his. He's tough but gets chilled easy now and a heater would make joyriding much better at this time of year. I Have found nothing that specifically Says it's made for this particular UTV I don't know what to make of the More generic Hacher versions Or how adaptable they are. I've read They have come from the factory with Heaters but It says nothing about Adding
