Quieter exhaust!

I'm sure this is an old topic, but, after doing some research it looks like atv/ UTV riders having been trying to make their rides a little quieter. I've read discussion boards going  back 10-15 years of those trying to make their  sport ride quieter....but never see a real good answer. I've seen a few suppliers of " Silencers"....but they just lower the tone or reduce sound a few db's.

Why haven't the OEM builders designed exhausts systems that are truly quiet from the factory?

What we have done is use a motorcycle muffle you will have to go to parts store and buy a 90 degree bend and ad a car or motorcycle muffler car right behind engine.Left to right  behind engine.You should make a heat shield so no body gets brunt.You can get it as quit as you wan't.You can get a motor cycle muffler used on eBay car muffler will be quieter.This is for Trooper.But works good on any UTV Good luck

Thanks for the info. When you say "install a muffler behind the motor", do you mean to remove the existing muffler that came on the unit, then install a car muffler?.... Or do you mean to install car muffler after the existing muffler?

i have a Hisun, Sector 250... Just an FYI

Yes leave it off.You will not need it.Just get a car muffler will be Quite Vary Quite!

I have a couple of brand new Harley mufflers I took off an Electraglide. Start there or go straight for the Car muffler?

Hello all...

i removed the exhaust pipe from my Hisun Sector 250. I Installed a 6" round, Walker ( Quiet Flow ) muffler. The OAL was 14". The body is 10" long, with 1-1/2" inlet and outlet pipe diameter.

This modification made a very big difference.....much quieter!!! ( I had to make a special tool to remove the 4 springs that hold the 2 pipes together)

i do have one question.....why does Hisun use a double wall exhaust pipe. The inner pipe is 1-1/8".... The outer pipe is 1-1/2".... Is this to protect the inner pipe?. reduce heat?..etc???.... And how did they bend both pipes at the same time.....one inside the other???

I'll include pictures with new pipe and muffler tomorrow.

That looks great do you bend pipes an fabrication the manifold.Good job.The 2 pipes i think is to keep the heat down inside?

Hey all....all done. The new exhausts 100% better....much quieter!!

 

Attached are some before and after pictures.

I used a new Walker, Quier-Flow muffler....catalog says its for a 1983 Toyota. It is 6" round..body is 10" long, it has 1-1/2" inlet/ outlet/ offset pipes....I made/ fabricated/ welded the hanger on the muffler. ....and of course bent a pipe to adapt from the existing exhaust.

i had my wife record from the same place both times to get an accurate noise level...I'm was shocked/ impressed

What browser are you using?  Are you on a desktop/laptop or tablet/phone? I am able to without issue click the links, download and play in windows from chrome browser.

Hmm, good videos and both work John.  I'm sure to try the same thing as the Walker muffler seems much more quiet to me.  Did you seem to lose any performance or other side effects?  You stated, "....and of course bent a pipe to adapt from the existing exhaust."  How did you bend a piece of tailpipe, at the muffler shop??

i cut and welded bent pieces together to get the angles I needed. If I had to do it over, I would have bought a section of 1-1/2" pipe bends from Amazon .....it would have went much quicker.

be sure to use a Walker " quiet flow"... They are the quietest. ..25.00 from Amaxon

i have seen no difference in performance ...runs great

Hi Dan...yes  the 22229 muffler us the one I used. I got mine from Amazon ..25.00, free shipping

word of caution ....there are four springs holding the exhaust pipe on...be patient taking them off. I made a pair of Springg removers...just to make it easier.

ugly, but they work great...welded two pieces of flat stock ( 3/4 x 1/8") to a pair of  old channeloks

dont go by the picture...the 22229 muffler is round....and it is the one I used

I used to work on snowmobiles a lot (before moving south) and their exhaust pipes are held together with the same type of exhaust springs.  I have a couple different "spring removal / installation" tools, but none of them are quite like that.  You might want to patent that bad boy!
